Darts by Aster Kyle G. on BFM 89.9
So the interview came out on BFM 89.9 last Saturday the 13th of July. Listening back to the podcast I couldn't stop laughing at how I sounded or the things I said. Nonetheless, it was a great experience, no regrets.
Please take note that I know that I may not be the best darter in Malaysia or the world, but I've learnt great things from great players and it's more of sharing my dart experience with whomever is willing to listen (or read). Thank you Mum and especially Dad for playing the game the way it is and the way I will always play it. Also, a big Thank You for all the guidance, advise and memories, to all those that I've had the privilege of training with, playing with and meeting.
Have a listen to the podcast below, (it's the final 5 minutes of the show) and I truly hope you enjoyed it!
Till then, Cheers!

My First Ever Dart Interview
I recently was interviewed about darts on BFM 89.9 and a million questions popped through my head. The experiences and memories flashed through my mind and i just had to write a post about it. Honestly, this was my first ever radio interview ever. The previous one, being in a group, I don't really count. Anyway, I was recommended by a friend of mine cause he knew I played darts like forever. A shout-out to Edmund Woo for the recommendation!
So this post, I'll be answering 10 questions related to darts to anyone out there who shares a similar story or an even more interesting dart background than I did. Hope you enjoy the read.
1. How long have I played darts?
Honestly, it feels like my whole life. I remember throwing darts with my parents since I was a kid. But to what I remember or can count, 8 years in total.
2. When did you start playing darts?
It all started when the World Cup was held in Malaysia in 2001. Back then, hardly anyone, my age at least played darts. I was only 15 years old then. The Malaysian team wanted to send a junior team. And seeing as that my parents were darters as well, I tried out.it was between 2 players for the boys team and 2 players for the girls. Unfortunately, after months of training, and selection, I only managed to be a reserve player. I gave up to focus on my studies and never really picked it up till I was 20. I never looked back since.
3. What team do I play for? And have played for?
I started from a team formed by my dad called Bruz, which was an abbreviation of Bitches are Uz. Then I played for a team I trained with regularly called Aristos for about 3-4 years. I then left to join a mentor of mine and formed Team Hi 5. And after 3-4 years, I'm back at Aristos.
4. What is your most memorable dart moment?
I've had quite a few. But if I was to name one, it would be my first ever Malaysian Open. I still remember it as it was yesterday. I was playing for Aristos Team B and It was the last qualifying game, we needed to win or get knocked out. I remember checking in the foursome 1001 x 1 after what seemed like a million darts from everyone. Madhouse (double 1) it was. Then came the last singles, with the score tied at 6-6. I remember playing a simple game of all twenties in my last leg to take the game 2-0 for the win. It was a test of nerves and pure focus. Another memorable moment was playing at the last edition of the SWIDA Open in the same team as Dad. But we'll leave that story for another day.
5. What are one of the few things you've learnt from playing darts?
Firstly, darts helped me with my math when I was in high school. It made me count quickly and made me look at numbers in a very different manner. Secondly, it opened my mind to analyse everything I did in my life as well. See, I learnt that darts was similar to life. You name the sayings you hear in a lifetime, and you can relate them to darts. Practice makes perfect. One step at a time. Better late than never (when it came to checking). But the one thing that stuck with me throughout my life, is that, you win some and you lose some. The same went with my life, I won some and I lost some. The game of darts, the game of life.
6. What was one advise you would never forget?
Well, the funniest one is one my national coach and family friend Kevin Rozario advised me. I had just picked up darts again, and after a long long session of training and playing, I asked him, what would be his most important advise to give me about playing darts. He turned around and said dont! Don't start playing. Seriously. Other than that, it was, every time you stand on that line (oche), you give it everything! Anything less, don't' bother going up.
7. If there was one thing you could change throughout you dart journey, what would it be?
That I would have never stopped playing at 15 and planned my time better with training to be better than I am right now.
8. What would you like to achieve in darts?
I'm not saying that I want to be the world champion. But I would love to win not only team events but a few singles events as well and dedicate it to my mother who gave up darts to raise the family and my dad who taught me how to love the sport. Being in the National squad again wouldn't be too bad either!
9. Your one advise to up and coming darters?
I'm not in any position to tell, but besides the train hard and train smart advise that any sport would tell you to do, remember why you played the game, for the fun and joy of it. Cherish the friendships that you make because its also just a game. Most importantly, learn how to count/calculate! Whether its steel-tip or soft-tip darts, know your numbers! That just irritates me when darters don't know how to set or check an out-house.
10. Lastly, football or darts?
Hard one to choose, but I have to say darts cause of all the experiences I've been through. Don't take football away as well, it's just that I love my darts!
Hope I didn't bore you with my Q&A session but do comment if you have similar experiences or something you think you'd like to add on.
Stay tune for the interview on BFM 89.9 on Saturday July the 13th!
Till then, cheers!

Idarts Trinity Grand Opening
So I recently went for the Grand Opening for Idarts 4th outlet (Idarts Trinity) at Jaya One Petaling Jaya. It was by coincidence as my Team Aristos went and also a call by my cousin Justin who convinced me to give it a go. I was also at the Grand Opening of its first outlet, so why not this one eh?
It was pretty impressive as it was packed to the brim. There was hardly any room to stand about but luckily my team was there early with a table next to the main board. Free flow and free game play was on the cards for the night. So, you can guess that it was gonna be a pretty good night. And it was.
The grand opening was pretty simple, a ribbon cutting ceremony and some champagne popping. However, I have to say that the highlight of the night was the match between two Dartslive Japanese players playing against each other in a best of three match. A lady and a young chap 15 years of age. The maturity of the lad playing darts was something even I didn't expect and couldn't recall myself being that composed playing at that age representing the national team. Nonetheless the lady took the game 2-0 with cheers and jeers from the intrigued public.
Notable veteran players were there such as Malaysia's most notable soft-tip player Amin Ghani, and Singapore slinger Harith Lim. Of course recently appointed Phoenix Representative Shidy (Team Aristos Captain) was amongst the crowd but was quiet and quite well disguised in a hoodie.
Few beers, a glass of champagne, couple of rounds of darts. What else could be better? Did I mention the beauties that were there? :)
Check out Idarts Trinity Facebook page for all the photos!

Back Again?
Well,
I've had a long long journey that has led me back to here.
Seeing as that darts has grown in the past couple of years, it seems like a good time to come back and share some of my experiences and also what's been going on in the dart scene now.
So, if you're reading this, i'll be back to update this page and hopefully you'll enjoy a good read.
If you're wondering what i normally write about, go through the past post and hopefully you'll like a post or two.
Till then, cheers.

Throw Analysis
This week has been a stressful week for darts. When i came back from the Riveria tournament, i realized that because i was throwing my darts harder than usual. Monday was brainwashing day because i had to adjust my mind to control the strength i have in my hand. I could throw properly and it was frustrating. Wednesday though was a bit better but was feeling like i was developing a jam and true enough on Thursday, there was signs of me not releasing the dart as i usually do. Its scares me to know that i might be developing dartitis again.
Take a look at the video in my previous entry. http://fundartmentals.blogspot.com/2009/04/how-i-throw.html
The jam happens when its near my eye. Its not the normal flow you can see in the video. In fact i didn't realize until just now that in the video that my throw doesn't look smooth enough. It holds a while longer near my eye where the jam is forming. So naturally that is the point of dartitis and it looks like that is what ill be working on for a while.
Will update with a video once problem is rectified. Hopefully it is.

HI5 Vs Pandan Lake Club
2nd friendly of the year. It was against the team which is organising the Pandan Lake Club Open being held on the 18th and 19th of April. Yes, that is next week. The team is looking great at the moment. With our latest addition Ram, who was a former team mate of mine not a while back ago. A man with great spirit and never die attitude, Ram is an excellent addition to the now complete 5 of HI5.
The game was set to start at 8pm. The Pandan Lake boys were raring to go and we were ready. We took the foursome by storm and were at a comfortable 200+ point lead and although the opponents crawled back, Team HI5 managed to secure the first point of the day. Lim was up next for his single and although he couldn't find the right balance to his darts, he adjusted constantly and with a focus mind pull 2points from the opponents to give the team a 3-0 lead. Finally i was up partnering Lim and confidence were sky high. Every dart i felt in my hand were sure but it didn't show. I don't know how to explain it. No matter what i did, i just couldn't throw the dart properly. I felt right, the standing felt right, the mind felt at ease but the hand wouldn't listen. Surprisingly enough Lim provided marvelous scoring and i provided the confident enough checking. I even managed to pull a 68 check in an unfavoured manor to secure the game. Hit the 5, went for the 13, and confidently checked it in the bull. Score at the moment 5-1. Jimmy Lee stepped up on the line and obviously pulled a victory. Without dropping a sweat, smiling and laughing all the way to a 2-1 win. This already secured the game at 7-2 but for friendly sake Jimmy Lee and SK finished up their doubles 2-0. And Ram in his official debut for HI5 lost 0-2 for a total of 10-4. What a victory and this looks to be like a great build up for the tournament next weekend.
More updates soon. Happy Darting.

Dartitis
Dartitis (pronounced dart-eye-tis) is a condition which can affect dart players, and severely damage their performance and results. It can be compared to the 'yips', a movement disorder which can affect golf players as they take their putting stroke. The term is used in reference to players who struggle with some kind of psychological problem with their technique and/or release of their darts.
The most famous case of dartitis came in 1986, when five-time World Champion, Eric Bristow revealed he was having problems with the release of his darts. Eric Bristow managed to make a partial recovery from the condition, and even managed to regain the number one position in the world rankings.
Players affected
The following players have been reported sufferers from the condition of dartitis.

My Theories On Dartitis by Kyle G.
I've personally been through it. It was the most painful experience of my life. Not that it was physically painful but more soulfully. See can you imagine not being able to do something you really love doing and try hard at. Ask any paralympic and they will tell you how they feel. Well, that's how i felt. To the point where tears would roll down my cheeks and I'd feel disappointment with myself every night driving back home thinking where did i go wrong.
Dartitis in my opinion is a mental condition. You are asking your body to do something that it cant or refuses to do. Darts on the other hand is a game where your body memory is constantly in use and your mind and hand work mutually. Put two and two together it is basically telling you that you are forcing your hand to do something that it doesn't want to do. Thus, your mind is not allowing your hand to release the dart.
Why does this happen. My theory is;
As for how to get over it? Well try this out. It has a bit of the elements i had getting over dartitis. Go and try it and don't worry to much. Happy Darting.
Mick from Love Darts says...
I used to play darts in my local league for many years earning myself a comfortable reputation. Disaster struck when I slowly started to hesitate releasing the dart and eventually lifting my left leg from the floor (right handed), followed by lifting off my right foot onto tip-toe (dartitis sufferers will know what i mean!).
As being a great dart lover, I can now say that after many hours of frustration I have overcome this awful condition. The old Mick is back at the oche, playing with my brother and son on a weekly basis. I know there are plenty of helpful tips out there but hopefully these might do the trick.

Put two and two together it is basically telling you that you are forcing your hand to do something that it doesn't want to do. Thus, your mind is not allowing your hand to release the dart.
Why does this happen. My theory is;
- Your mind and hand are pushed over the limit. Especially your mind. Thus, not allowing you to do what you could or would normally do
- Pushing too hard for that triple 20 you 'have' to hit. Note that 'have' is highlighted. It's like asking your body to run 100m in 8 secs.
- Not physically ready when playing. When your body and mind are tired, its telling you that it needs a break, not to push me harder.
- Not mentally ready when playing. What i mean is, sometimes or most of the time a player is think he is mentally ready, but one might not be 100% there. You might be thinking of work, kids, wife, functions, your 'dartitis' and so much more. This is absolutely the wrong way to even play darts. One's mind should be absolutely clear and focused on the task ahead.
- Enjoying the game. I feel sometimes players forget that this is a game to enjoy and take it too seriously when their darts aren't happening. It is then that they push themselves harder without the right mind set and screw up their stroke or get dartitis. Remember why you played darts? Yes, because you loved it.
As for how to get over it? Well try this out. It has a bit of the elements i had getting over dartitis. Go and try it and don't worry to much. Happy Darting.

1. | Throw the darts in an aggressive manor, meaning a lot faster than your normal release. |
2. | Don't concentrate aiming the dart to much on the target you want to hit, (just throw fast at that area). |
3. | Move your position of throw, not the stance, and allow your mind to float at times thinking 'yes, I feel better at this angle'. |
4. | If this does not work don't give up! Believe me I will try my hardest to get you through it. |
5. | Pick up your darts as often as you can, preferably not long spells. Try 30 minute sessions! (Relax) then say to yourself these are your last 3 darts, full stop, know more, then just walk away. |
6. | One of the biggest mistakes I used to make is watching players on the television. I used to say to my brother 'Watch this, I've been watching Phil Taylor throw'. This is your idol we are talking about (don't get me wrong) idols are great but what I would do is copy and totally release the dart in the same way Taylor did, but this is not the way I would release it. (Come on think!), just because Taylor is a multiple world champion, it doesn't mean you will have the same style, and I'm sure Taylor will back you on this. |
7. | Once you have started to throw your darts at speed and feeling more comfortable, slowly get back to your normal self. |

Sepang 3some Challenge
First outing for the fresh team of Hi5. Representing the team was Jimmy Lee, SK and Lim HP.
Format was a Threesome Best of 1 - 801. Doubles Best of 3 - 501 and Singles Best of 3 - 501. Approx 40 teams went.
Conditions were bad. Very cramped and hot.
However, Team Hi5 managed to reach the semi's and lost out by 2 points. A great result for a team who recently formed. Next tournament to look out for, for the team is the Pandan Jaya Team Event in mid-April.
Enjoy some of the pictures taken by myself;

Monday, May 5, 2008This is what i wrote almost a year ago. It is amazing to see how much i've progressed since then. It was a total change in transaction. From standing, posture, stroke, mentality, attitude, etc. Every aspect of my game has been tweaked to the way i feel confident in throwing today. This was not only a time of trial for me but a time of discovery for myself. I learnt that arrogance can only lead you down(hard to admit). I learnt to keep my head straight and keep going at it. I have learnt to avoid negativity and omit positivity. I learnt to be head strong and humble. Most importantly of all, I've learnt how to enjoy the game i love most.
[Darts] Gravity?
It has remarkably been a month since I felt I played proper darts. Inconsistent throws, dumb-founding scores and losing streaks are all I’ve faced in the past month. My darts feels like strangers to me. That comfortable strokes, 140’s and occasional 180’s are all a thing of the past at the moment. Every dart seems like an up-hill battle of controlling. Occasional (Tons) feel like gifts from God. Some say it’s the mind, some say it’s the heart, and some may say otherwise, but I believe it is the Law’s of Physics; “What goes up must come down”
I believe and I know that sportsmen and women have a moment in their careers where everything seems to be going down-hill. No more titles, more losses and more inconsistency are one of the few problems faced. As a current example, Roger Federer who undoubtedly shown the world his excellence in tennis wining back-to-back titles, grand slam finals, being World No. 1 and poised to break Sampras records is struggling to win a match. Injuries, inconsistency and “The Laws of Physics” have brought the great man down. At least for the time-being. But slowly climbing up again, I would say it is virtually impossible if he doesn’t continue his success in the months/years to come.
And just like that, so my darts have been. Having a successful year in my books, my level has dropped way down the ladder. With the change of darts, more time, personal training, etc only time would tell if it will all come back to place. And just like Kevin R. says, “ All you gotta do is keep plugging it, and it WILL come” and that’s what I intend to do. Hopefully before the Penang Open at the end of the month.

My goal is to keep this humble attitude in not only darts but everything in life and keep the positive attitude of not only other but myself as well.
"Everyday we learn something from life, in one way or another. Why not, we apply that in the things we love as well, darts?"
This is a shout out to all who have stood by me during my trying times in darts and life as well. You know who you are.
Funny But True
This is a video of Wayne Mardle (Favourite Player) throwing a perfect 9 darter in style. It was edited but the 'checking' trick is true. So check it out!

1st Game of the Season
Albeit it was a friendly match between the 2 teams from the same pub, to me, it was the first competitive game of many more to come this year.
It was between the newly formed high5 and Suzuki. Line-up was;
Lim, SK, Kyle, Jimmy Lee VS Ron, Albert, Thomas, MS Raja
Kyle VS Ron
Lim/Kyle VS Ron/Thomas
Lim VS MS Raja
Jimmy Lee/SK VS MS Raja/John Chew
Jimmy Lee VS Thomas
Job was simple. Just play my darts, no worries, know that the bottom would cover me a*se in case in lost and enjoy myself. Mind was ready, although could have been better if warmed up more.
4some was practically a stroking practice to me. Threw an average of 60 in 9 darts. Eventually team winning at the end.
Singles was up now and watching Ron in a couple of games earlier that day didn't really help much. I knew he could hit those ton's and ton 40's easily. All i told myself was 'just throw your darts'. Started off well with a simple 60. Ron replied 140. Hit a ton and he replied 40plus. Game went on to him setting himself a house but couldn't finish with me sitting on a 95. I knew what i had to do. Semi, 20, bull was all that was on my mind. Give myself a shooting chance at least. First dart - Bull, then a 13 to set up a 32 and without any hesitation i checked the d16. There was a roar from the crowd. At this point of time, my heart was beating as fast as you can say check dart! Second game was Topsy-turvey. Ron seemed shattered losing the first leg and i just couldn't hold myself together managing only a ton and some 40 scores. Again he set himself up and again i had an out shot to play. 108. Again i set my mind to a t19, 19 and d16 finish. True enough, first dart 19, then the t19 and just a hairline miss from the 32. Ron looked worried and pressure i guessed got to him and he went from house to house to set himself up a d1(madhouse). By this time in 2 darts i sealed the game for a team lead of 3-0.
Doubles came and Lim and I score looked like we were throwing cock-eyed darts. But here and there managed to pull an 85 or ton. 1st leg went to us and 2nd went to them. 3rd leg was tightly contested and they looked earliest to set up a house, Lim leaving me with a 130 to check. Confidence was high. First dart a 60, then 20, and just a whisker away, hit the semi-bull. Ron came to the board and couldn't set the 90plus score leaving Thomas with a 77 to play. Lim went up, safely hit a 3 and missed his d11. Thomas went up confidently hit his 57 to set up a d10 and hit both his darts on the wire. By my second dart, it was all wrapped up.
Lim went on to lose to former Malaysia number 1, MS Raja 0-2 and Jimmy Lee/ SK finished the job with a 2-0 victory. Final score ended 7-3.
Happy with the win. Happy with the darts. A lot of bits and bolts need to be adjusted. Like, calmness, eagerness, and mind frame. Oh well, next up is Sepang 3some and Johore 3some. Let's move on from there shall we. Happy Darting!
